Chez Nous

Why roller skating?

Upper Darby was home to the Chez Vous Roller Skating Rink beginning in November 1929. Even though this was the same year that the stock market crashed, roller skating still served as a powerful outlet for many people for decades. Roller skating has been a significant part of Black culture and has provided a safe space for Black people to express themselves and break free from forms of oppression and discrimination. Black skaters used outside spaces to skate, which led to skating becoming a symbol of freedom and expression. We’re bringing that energy back - Roll Bounce style.

We got you.

Chez Nous, meaning “our home” in French, will anchor roller skating as not only an exciting and fun physical activity but also a tool for community building and creative expression. This will be a space for young people to feel free, connected, and empowered in marginalized communities. For those who have been impacted or feel disconnected due to their experiences with juvenile detention or incarceration, this initiative offers a chance to reclaim agency, develop resilience, and be a part of a larger supportive network.

In partnership with local rinks and advanced skaters, we will host roller skating sessions to build community, allow young people to develop interests, encourage physical activity, and have fun!

Skating sessions

Regular group skating lessons and open skate times will be available to foster fitness, teamwork, self-confidence, and introduce a new hobby. Our sessions will take place in Hoffman Park in Lansdowne. Equipment for those who do not own skates, helmets, or pads will be provided by our partners. Just let us know!

Skating events and performances

Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and accomplishments through public performances to build community, confidence, and sense of pride. Performances and dates will be announced!

Outings

Trips to roller skating rinks and skating events will be organized to expose youth and young adults to new, positive environments.
